Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs)

A document that fills out policies and proposals in a Development Plan Document. There are several possible types of Supplementary Planning Document, e.g.:

  • design guides
  • development briefs, master plans
  • village design statements.

They are part of the Local Development Framework and, if relevant, can be a material consideration in decisions on planning applications. However, they are not an official part of the Development Plan and not subject to Independent Examination; and so have less formal weight than the Development Plan Document to which they refer. The local planning authority has to involve the community in their preparation.
